Property Developers' Dirty Secret

Justus van der Hoven

What many people don’t realize is that to become a property developer, you don’t need a special degree or qualification. In fact, a number of successful developers haven’t even finished school or studied at university.

They have, however, gained the necessary knowledge and experience to carry out a property development – like learning to bake according to a recipe. This is a remarkable insight and should give you hope that no matter your academic background, you too can grasp the tools and learn to become a developer.

So how can you learn the skills required as a property developer? Are there mentors or programs that can teach you what you need to know?

Learning how to be a developer

Something you should know upfront is that being a full-time developer is not like having a conventional job where you earn a salary.

Due to the low barriers of entry, many people are enticed by real estate as a way to ‘get rich quick’. The reality is that making a start in the industry can be extremely challenging, daunting, and can feel lonely at times. You will rely heavily on a network of professionals, legal experts, and financial investors to trust in your skills. You will also be working with large sums of money and need to have the confidence to commit to a project one hundred percent and carry your product all the way to market. So, while you don’t need a property degree or a qualification to start your own development, you certainly need to have experience and know what you are doing.
